Dan graduated from Harlingen High School in Harlingen, Texas in 1950. After High School he joined the military, serving in the Navy from 1952 - 1956 then reenlisting and serving again from 1960 - 1968. For his service to his country, he was appointed an Admiral in the Texas Navy in 1970 by then Governor Preston Smith.

Following his graduation from Dallas Baptist College in 1979, he worked for several years as the Custodian for Turnpike Christian School and Turnpike Church of Christ in Grand Prairie, where he was affectionately referred to as 'Mr. Dan'. "It's in the book, and I wrote the book."
